Job Summary and Qualifications

The Trauma Performance Improvement (PI) Coordinator works in collaboration with Trauma Medical Director (TMD) and Trauma Program Director (TPD) to coordinate all aspects of the Trauma Department’s Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) Program. The Trauma PI Coordinator is responsible for utilizing independent judgement to assure evidence-based standards of care within the trauma program are met. The Trauma PI Coordinator conducts performance reviews of the continuum of care from the prehospital setting to hospital discharge and determines compliance with patient care practice management guidelines, policies, procedures, and established standards of care. The Trauma PI Coordinator assesses the care provided by nurses and other medical staff and reports any deviations from the standard to the TMD and TPD, involving nursing leadership and/or the medical staff. The Trauma PI Coordinator possesses in-depth knowledge of chart abstraction and the trauma registry, including reporting, data analysis, trend identification and benchmarking of outcomes based upon the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT), as well as state and regional standards and recommendations for quality and maintenance for trauma center verification/re-verification and local/State designation. What you will do in this role:

  • You will utilize independent judgement to manage PIPS activities with the TMD and TPD to facilitate overall Trauma Program quality assurance.
  • You will develop and implement clinical and organizational systems that result in the performance improvement of the trauma service line by coordinating implementation and revision of guidelines for the care of the patient.
  • You will complete concurrent and retrospective review of cases to identify quality, timelines and systems of care to meet ACS standards.
  • You will track and report any identified quality issues and/or PI events. Monitors PI events, opportunities for improvement, deaths, discharge to hospice, transfers in/out, hospital events, adherence to trauma service practice management guidelines, policies and procedures, actions and loop closure/event resolution to improve trauma patient care process and outcomes.
  • You will analyze performance data for trends and patterns. Investigates cause of variation or changes in performance levels. Recommends remedial measures for process improvement and staff performance issues to address variations.
  • You will. participate in the planning and presentation of continuing education programs in the community, outlying hospitals, and EMS agencies on trauma topics.
What qualifications you will need:
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in the state of California.
  • BCLS, ACLS & PALS required
  • TNCC required
  • Bachelor’s Degree (BSN) required.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing preferred
  • Trauma Outcomes and Performance Improvement Course (required within 12 months of hire)
  • 3+ years’ experience in Nursing required
  • 3+ years’ experience in Trauma Nursing preferred
  • Experience in Quality/Performance Improvement preferred
  • Experience in Project Management preferred

Riverside Community Hospital is a large acute care facility with 517 beds, established in 1901. It has the most extensive Emergency Room and Level I Trauma Center in the Inland Empire region and is the primary recipient of STEMI (heart attack) cases in Riverside County.
