First Student is immediately hiring a Diesel Mechanic. This Mechanic position with First Student involves maintaining and repairing school buses to ensure they are safe and reliable for transporting students.
Diesel Mechanics leverage their expertise to diagnose, repair, and prepare vehicles for our customers. From engine repairs to steering and suspension adjustments, as well as brake checks, our technicians ensure each vehicle performs at its best.
As part of our team, you'll work in a clean, modern, climate-controlled environment with top-tier production facilities dedicated to reconditioning vehicles. Your role will involve inspecting, reconditioning, and repairing vehicles, ensuring that our customers drive away with confidence and peace of mind.
In this collaborative role, you’ll work alongside others to tackle technical challenges swiftly and effectively. You'll gain experience working on a wide variety of domestic and foreign vehicles, all while upholding our high standards of safety, cleanliness, and organization.
The job typically requires the following qualifications and responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance & Repair: Perform regular maintenance, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and brake inspections. Repair or replace faulty parts to ensure the buses meet safety standards.
- Support preventive maintenance (PMs), safety checks, and annual DOT inspections.
- Diagnose and carry out comprehensive vehicle and equipment repairs, including brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, and transmissions.
- Ensure accuracy in completing work orders.
- Provide assistance with mobile emergency services.
- Diagnostic Work: Use diagnostic tools to identify mechanical issues and troubleshoot problems with various systems, including engines, transmissions, and electrical components.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed on each vehicle.
- Safety Inspections: Conduct thorough inspections of buses to ensure they comply with safety regulations.
Qualifications:
- A valid driver's license is required; willingness to obtain a CDL during employment is encouraged—we provide training!
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in automotive or diesel maintenance and repair, or equivalent technical school education.
- Must have a mechanic's tool set.
- Open to participating in the ASE certification program, with training, testing, and bonuses offered.
- As a safety-sensitive employee, you will be subject to DOT drug testing. Note that DOT Regulation 49 CFR Part 40 prohibits the use of Schedule I drugs, including marijuana, for any reason.
- Experience: Typically, employers prefer candidates with previous experience in diesel or automotive repair. Some positions may require specific experience with bus or heavy vehicle maintenance.
- Physical Requirements: The job can be physically demanding, requiring lifting, bending, and working in various weather conditions.
Salary & Benefits:
- Hourly Pay: $24 - $32 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications (NOT flat rate).
- ASE Certification Bonus: Earn an additional $0.25 per hour for each ASE certification you hold or obtain.
